Albany Times Union: State lawmakers reject Albany’s proposed commuter tax
ALBANY — State elected officials have rejected a proposed income tax on people who travel into the city of Albany to work.
The city does not have the power to enact a commuter tax on its own and would need authorization from the Legislature and governor to do so. A bill in the Common Council calls on state legislators to pass — and Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign — a bill allowing it to introduce the proposed levy.
State lawmakers do not seem likely to oblige them.
Fahy described the proposal as “the wrong approach.”
Assemblywoman Gabriella Romero described the proposal as “not serious policymaking” in a letter to the council that faulted members for not discussing the matter with local state legislators.
