Additional $1 million going towards old Beech-Nut site
CANAJOHARIE, N.Y. (WRGB) -- Years of lost business and failed plans could finally be behind Canajoharie's former Beech-Nut factory with $1 million secured from the state. 65 units of affordable housing with room for businesses is the current plan.
Senator Pat Fahy spoke exclusively to CBS6's Anthony Krolikowski about focusing on the former Beech-Nut factory when she entered office. “The very first they wanted me to see was the old Beech-Nut site that they have been anxiously trying to redevelop.”
Being close to the highway, Senator Fahy described the lot as the perfect spot for business. She explained multiple efforts were made by stakeholders to strike a deal, one of which being a marijuana growing facility that fell through.
“Quite frankly, given the upheaval that we are seeing in the cannabis market, the ups and downs right now and how difficult it has been for growers, for sellers and others, I think this is even better.”
So, what exactly is going there? The senator said the housing will likely be a mix of market rate and mixed income. Local officials are still actively meeting to figure out the next steps, including the remaining factory’s future.
